We believe the best music available is often ignored by the major record labels, so we fully support those independent musicians who believe in themselves and their music. Whether on small, independent labels or on their own labels, these artists are traveling roads the large labels are afraid to traverse. Yet it's these roads of independence that produce music that is original, distinct, and fearless.

Here we present a compendium of artists who have never been signed to a major record label or have released music on their own record label. The definition of what makes an artist an independent artist varies. Some define an independent artist as someone who avoids record contracts altogether. Others define an independent artist as one relies solely on themselves for financial backing. The music industry itself defines an independent artist if the artist is not signed to one of the three major labels - Sony, Warner or Universal - and defines a major label as one that has more than 5% market share. All other labels are considered indie labels.
