Independent Gospel Music
Independent Contemporary Christian Music

Gospel is a type of distinctively American religious music associated with evangelism and based on the melodies of folk music blended with elements of spirituals and jazz. For many listeners, the word "gospel" brings to mind the sound of large African- American Southern gospel choirs, singing joyous songs of celebration. These songs grew out of traditional spirituals. A second style of gospel is country gospel, sounding like traditional country with lyrics about God. These types of gospel, along with the less-known blues gospel provided part of the foundation of contemporary gospel and Christian music which came into existence in the late '70s with groups such as The Second Chapter of Acts and Love Song. This later evolved into Christian music that was soft rock and pop by artists such as Amy Grant (who later completely crossed over into pop).
