Polka Hall of Fame member Ronny Setniker's fascination with the Button Box began at age 12 when he would visit his aunt and uncle, Alice and John Press, in Gilbert, MN. He would listen with delight to his uncle John play his button box, or accordian. Ron's mother was reluctant to get him started on the button accordian, since she didn't want him playing in the bars. But button accordian wasn't the only instrument Ronny Setniker was learning to play. Ronny also played the trumpet in the Biwabik High School Band, orchestra, city band and in an orchestra named: The Brass Sextet. All these musical experiences taught him music theory and sight reading.
Later, Ronny Setniker took button accordion lessons from Raymond Podboy, the Director of the Chicago Button Accordion Club. Ron was always working to improve his skills, since he wanted to record the songs he wrote, as well as other Slovenian and ethnic favorites. In 1982, he organized The Polka Chimes Orchestra consisting of himself, Matt & John Anzelc and Les Harkonen. They made one recording before disbanding. Ronny went solo, and became one of the most sought-after button accordian players in the country.
In 1992, Ronny was selected by the Ohio Arts Council to represent the State of Minnesota and to play at Tony Petkovsek's Annual Thanksgiving Day Polka Party in Stouffer's Tower City Plaza Hotel in Cleveland, which has the largest ballroom between New York and Chicago. Then on on June 24, 1999, he was inducted into the Polka Hall of Fame at Ironworld Discovery Park in Chisholm, Minnesota.
Today Ronny continues to promote and popularize Slovenian Style Polka, playing both the chromatic and diatonic button accordian.
