Ian Alexy is a dynamic singer/songwriter/guitarist. His new CD Rootedness is a ten song collage of original poetry, deft finger-picking, jazzy melodies, and the heart-warming tales of a well-traveled young man. Teague means bard--lyric poet--in Celtic, and like the medieval Irish bards who traveled from town to town, Alexy, who’s got roots in California and New Jersey, has spent the last few years based in Duluth and roaming the Midwest bearing songs heavy with news of the human condition--stories, philosophies, parables, and his own folklore--and a groove born from funk, country blues and folk, hip hop, soul, roots rock, Americana and jazz.
In 1995 Ian studied jazz harmony and guitar at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston Ma. "It was an amazing time, there was a wide pool of creativity to draw from. I think that I may have learned more playing in student's apartments than in the classroom."
After a year at Berklee Ian Alexy transferred to Goddard College, the progressive arts school in rural Vermont. While studying music, literature and philosophy he began developing a unique songwriting style encompassing his studies of traditional acoustic blues and jazz with his lifelong love of rock to create a canvas for his poetic observations on life and love. His style became even more diverse after a semester abroad studying Highlife guitar and West African drumming in the indigenous villages of Ghana West Africa. After graduating Ian spent two years as a major player on the Burlington music scene. Ian recently expanded his horizons even further relocating to the independent music hotbed of Minnesota, where he is performing regularly in Minneappolis and Duluth.
With his brother Teague Alexy he has formed the Hobo Nephews Of Uncle Frank. They started the band as a duo in 2005 with a revolving cast of musicians helping them celebrate their original songs alongside inspired renditions of Leadbelly, Mississippi John Hurt and most importantly Woody Guthrie. They did their first tour to the rocky mountains in a Honda Civic hatchback in which they survived the 10,000 foot I-70 mountain pass in the middle of a blizzard.
Ian Alexy's debut album. Recorded with dobra virtusso and recording whiz Adam Frehm, features Alexy's passionate vocals and intrinsic guitar work in the forefront. Although Alexy plays several of the other instruments himself, the CD features some of Vermont's best musicians as accompanists.
